Life was a whirlwind for Sylvie Brett, at least for the past month or so. Since she saved the baby girl’s life a few weeks ago all she could think about was that little girl. She knew she probably looked like a stalker driving to Indiana and pleading her case, but she just knew that little girl was meant to be in her life.She couldn’t explain it, she just knew.
If you had asked her a year ago if this is what her life would be like now, she would have laughed at you. She didn’t see herself as a mom until she was at least married for a year or two, but life never asks you what you want.
So here she was putting together a crib in the middle of the floor of her living room. The air conditioning in her until was down, so she had a fan blowing and opened her apartment door for circulation. She was humming a tune as she put the crib together, and her mind began to wander.
She always imagined putting together a crib with her husband, or at least not alone.Yet, here she was with another relationship over, if you could call it that and once again alone.
The split between Dylan and her was amicable. They were on two different paths and she did basically just throw a kid into the mix when they were barely off the ground. She knew it wasn’t fair to ask him to play daddy when she didn’t even know if the relationship would last. So they ended it, and here she was again single and about to be a mom.
Her mind drifted to another, which she had done for the past few days or if she was honest with herself since he came back to visit a few weeks ago. Matt Casey.
He was so sweet to her when he heard about her plans, and backed her one hundred percent like he always does, he even went as far to drive to Indiana with Stella and Violet to provide support and back her up.He said that he wanted to do whatever he could do to help, and he did. He always did.
A smile formed on Sylvie’s lips as she thought about what they did for her. She knew that Matt was more than likely back on a plane right about now, heading once again to Oregon. With everything going on she didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye. She sent him a text thanking him, and that she wished him a safe trip back home but he hadn’t responded yet.
A throat cleared behind her and she jumped before looking behind her. She saw the man she was just thinking about leaning into her door.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” He said flashing her his signature smile that always made her weak in the knees.
Sylvie stood up and looked at him. “No, it's okay. What are you doing here? I thought you would be on a plane by now.” She scooted back a few steps to create a little more distance. She wished he hadn’t come to say goodbye, a text is safer. You feel less emotions through a text than letting your heart break once more in front of someone.
“I wanted to check on you, see how you were doing.” Sylvie nodded, taking a deep breath and willed her emotions to keep at bay.
“Great, they are dropping off the little girl tomorrow.” Sylvie stopped herself. “Julie, they are dropping Julie off tomorrow.”
Matt looked at her with a knowing smile. “Perfect name.”
“Yeah, it just seems appropriate.” Sylvie took a breath and looked around her apartment. “This is the last night I'll be in this apartment alone.”
“You are going to do great Sylvie.” Matt said, sensing her unease that she had buried below the surface.
“You think?”
“I know, you will be amazing and create so many great memories in this place for that little girl.We had some really great memories here too.”
“We did.” Sylvie said, giving him a small smile.
“I mean right here is where we had our first kiss.” Matt said motioning to the spot he was in. Sylvie nodded “Seems like a lifetime ago.” She said trying her hardest to keep the sadness in her voice to a minimum.
Matt nodded his head, trying his hardest not to think about how he royally screwed up that night and every other night he managed to put his foot in his mouth since then.
“You know you are the only one that ever got to be in this apartment, so everything around here has a memory of you. Some good, others not so much but I wouldn’t trade what we went through for anything no matter how short it was. God knows no relationship ever goes right for me anyway.” Sylvie meant the last part as a joke, but Matt could sense the pain underneath.
Matt nodded.”Stella told me about you and Dylan. I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, well he wasn’t ready, and honestly I understand completely. I just sprung this on him like it was a regular thing. Like “Hey I know we have only been dating a few short months, but let’s adopt a kid.” I mean who would want to do that?”
“I would.” Matt said, causing Sylvie to stop her rant.”I mean that is why I’m here. I heard about you and Dylan and just helping you with the baby situation the past few days. It has put things into perspective for me. I don’t want to do this again.”
“Do what again?”
“Leave Chicago without doing what I wanted to do since the last time I was here.”
“I don’t understand.” Sylvie was highly confused and did not know where he was heading with this, but she knew he had a difficult time expressing himself through his words.
“I’m not dating anyone.” Matt said, Sylvie looked at him with a sad look. “I’m sorry, what happened?”
‘No, I mean I lied the last time I was here. I wasn’t dating anyone then.” Sylvie looked at him with a semi shocked expression. “Why would you lie to me?”
“Because you said you were dating, and I didn’t want to ruin that for you. It also may have been a little due to pride that I felt like I had to say it but it was a lie. I tried and failed miserably until it dawned on me why it wasn’t working out with anyone.”
“Why is that?” Sylvie said, daring herself not to become hopeful.
“Because you can’t love someone when your heart is with someone else.”
“Matt-” Sylvie said, but Matt raised a hand which was a sign that he wanted to finish his train of thought.
“You know the night that you called and ended it. I admit I was hurt, and a little bit angry. We ended before we even got a chance to begin and I didn’t understand. So I started dating a few weeks later, even though I didn’t want to, the boys didn’t want me to be a bump on a log. So I went on some dates but something was always missing. When a date laughed, I instantly thought of yours. When they sat across from me I could smell their perfume and how it didn’t smell of coconut or lavender like you always did. Every single date I went on, it just made me miss being with you. So, I stopped dating and I looked back on us and I realized I screwed up. I left with the promise that nothing would change, but then I got so wrapped up in Oregon things I forgot about you. I made you feel like you weren’t important enough, and I know you have had relationships where you always came in second to other things or people, and I swore to myself we wouldn’t be like that and then I made you think we were just that.”
Sylvie’s eyes started welling up. As she tried her best to keep them at bay.
“My uncle, the one who passed away a few years back. He had a wife, they were married a very long time before she died and he never dated again. He stayed alone his whole life without opening his heart again because he lost his true love. I swore to myself that even if I came back to Chicago and you were still dating, I would wait, wait until our stars aligned and we would be together again, because I knew in my heart that you were the one I had to fight for. I don’t want to be alone. I don’t want to try to work with someone else. Because no matter how hard I try I can’t. I didn’t make you a priority with the boys, and I should have. I’m sorry.”
“After you left the last time, it broke my heart to walk away from you. A part of me wanted to run back, jump into your arms and beg you to stay but I knew it wasn’t my place. I would never regret you going to Oregon, ever. Ben and Griffin needed you, even if it happened right when we just got together. I knew in my heart it was the right thing to do, even if it broke my heart. Every relationship I have had always ended in disaster, and I saw the signs and I knew even though it broke me to do it, that I had to let you go because I couldn’t keep you away from Oregon when you were needed there. It would have been selfish, but there were days after we broke up that I wish I was. Even when I started dating Dylan I wasn’t into it, I was always missing or comparing him to you, and he even called it off because I think he knew deep down what I was trying to protect myself from. He knew that he would never have my heart, because someone else did. And I think you always will. It is kind of funny, how a heart can be split in two places at once.”
“It doesn’t have to be not much longer.”

Sylvie felt like she was now in a dream,here she was about to be a mom and Matt was coming back to Chicago. She felt like this was fate’s cold hand again making her have to choose between being a mom or being with Matt but she didn’t want to.
“So, what does that mean for us?” Sylvie asked, terrified of what fate was about to deal to her.Matt chuckled before moving his hand around. Sylvie caught a glimpse of a jewelry box. “It’s funny you should ask that.” Matt looked down at the box before opening it. “A few months after our first kiss, I sold my uncle's watch. I figured I had found the meaning behind that watch and I didn’t need it anymore. I saved most of it, put some towards Ben’s college and Griffin’s future,and when you came to visit I bought this while you weren’t looking. Matt turned the box in his hand revealing a diamond ring. “Matt-” Sylvie said with a gasp.
“I know it was soon, and we weren’t dating long but we were best friends for a long time before we were together, and if I’m being fair I was in love with you for a while before then too.So, I bought this for someday and when we broke up I kept it because I knew deep down it would be yours one day. We can make new memories in this apartment, or a house if you want to buy one. You,Me and Julie as a family.”
Before Sylvie could even think, Matt was kneeling. “I know this is crazy, and ridiculously soon and I know you just went through a break up but in my experience I know what it’s like not to live without you, and I don’t want to live that anymore. If you want to wait, then I will wait until you say it’s okay but I want you to know that I love you Sylvie Brett, and I want to marry you. So will you marry me.”
Tears flooded Sylvie’s cheeks as she stared at him stunned. The past twenty-four hours have been a tornado of emotions for her but one emotion she felt in that moment was love. When they broke up, she said, “maybe someday.” well she knew the pain that she felt when he left, and she knew her heart was meant to be with him. Were they going abnormally fast, maybe but as he had put it they knew each other so well. They knew they belonged to each other, and that they were home wherever the other was.
She was just dreaming about putting together a crib and raising a family with a husband and here he was wanting to make that dream their reality. Sylvie walked over and got down on her knees before putting a hand on either side of his face and said “Yes.”
Matt smiled his biggest smile before grabbing her left hand and sliding the ring on. They both looked up from the ring to each other before Matt captured Sylvie’s lips in his.
Sylvie knew the moment his lips were on hers that he was right. No matter how hard they tried to make it work with other people, they never could. They were meant for each other.
A thought occurred to Sylvie which made her chuckle into the kiss. Matt pulled back and look at her. “What’s so funny?”
‘It just occurred to me, we had our first kiss as a couple here and now our first kiss as an engaged couple here.”
Matt shook his head smiling. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Sylvie said before capturing his lips once more.
